Diabetes is a chronic disease, which occurs in cases, when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (hormone, regulating blood glucose levels), or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.

There are several types diabetes:

  • 1-type 2 – characterized by insufficient insulin production, as a result, the patient requires its daily administration. Usually, diagnosed in younger people 30 years old. Such patients are forced to receive insulin artificially (by constant injections).
  • In type 2 diabetes, insulin cannot be used effectively, which can lead to high blood sugar. Symptoms may be similar to type 1, but often less pronounced. Type 2 diabetes is 85-90% of all cases of diabetes mellitus in the adult population and is most common among older people 40 years old; usually, accompanied by obesity. For such patients, just like people, who have someone in their family who has diabetes, It is especially important to control your blood sugar levels.
  • Gestational – develops during pregnancy and is manifested by elevated blood glucose levels. Most often, this type is not established based on complaints., and when conducting a complex of medical research (screening). This type of diabetes is dangerous because, which can cause a number of complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

Classic symptoms of diabetes:

  • extreme thirst;
  • frequent need to urinate;
  • blurred vision;
  • increased fatigue;
  • weight loss.

If left untreated, diabetes can damage the blood vessels of the heart, eyes and kidneys, nervous system.

It should be noted, that the best way to detect diabetes at an early stage is to undergo regular medical examinations and blood tests.

 

The main risk factors for the development of the disease:

  • genetic predisposition (close relatives with diabetes), stress, excessive consumption of easily digestible carbohydrates (sugar, honey, sweets, etc.);
  • age (the older the person, the higher the risk);
  • overweight;
  • insufficient physical activity.

 

The most effective way prevention and delaying the development of type 2 diabetes is lifestyle correction. For this it is recommended:

  • maintain a healthy body weight;
  • lead a physically active lifestyle (devoting at least moderate loads 30 minutes a day) taking into account the age and capabilities of the body;
  • stick to a healthy diet, reduce your intake of sugar and saturated fats (margarine, butter, beer, fatty meat);
  • stop smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages;
  • monitor blood glucose levels if close relatives have diabetes mellitus, and also after 40 years old.

With the modern level of medicine, diabetes can rather be called a “way of life”, than a disease.
